The Tracteur Cuirasse Filtz (Filtz Armored Tractor) was a prototype French armored vehicle (tractor) from World War I. In 1915, probably only 10 copies of it were made, but the car never went into mass production. The vehicle was 3.8 m long, 1.4 m wide, with a height of 1.6 m. The empty weight was up to 4 tons. Probably the drive was provided by a single engine with a power of up to 45 hp. The armament consisted of a single 8 mm machine gun.
The Tracteur Cuirasse Filtz was developed for the needs of the French armed forces as an attempt to break the stalemate of trench warfare. Its main constructor was Georges Filtz, who based the construction on an already produced agricultural tractor of his own design. At the beginning of 1915, the design of this avant-garde structure was presented to General Joffre, who decided to build prototypes and conduct field tests. Section Technique du Genie (in short: S.T.G.) was responsible for their construction, which completed the order relatively quickly. Tests of the new design took place in the summer of 1915, which quickly showed the Tracteur Cuirasse Filtz's significant shortcomings in terms of mobility in the field and overcoming obstacles such as trenches. The project was abandoned very quickly, but it also made me aware of the need to work on tracked vehicles.
